NUS Mod Reviews

Was just looking for mods to take, and blog reviews are helpful so i shall be a good helpful NUS student to do my own blog reviews. but i'm lazy so don't expect much.

just finished my first year, pure math major, with a lot of other interests.

mods taken in Y1S1

MA1101R Linear Algebra I
one of my core mods, very easy. prof victor tan made it really fun too, with lecture quizzes, pop quizzes with sweets and chocs, as well as really funny and cute lecture slides. really makes it so easy to learn, but.. i'm a math major, its supposed to be easy ***lol***. it is, but the cohort is really big, LT26 is almost always full, quite hard to find seats. my tutor was really great too, prof chan heng huat, who explains really well. i think i did slightly less than average for my mid-terms.
difficulty (1 easiest, 5 hardest): 1
workload (1 easiest, 5 heaviest): 2
expected grade/achieved grade: A-

MA1102R Calculus
core mods, its alright. not easy easy, but not difficult. manageable i feel, with consistent work and effort. 2 lecturers, my lecturer was wang fei who is supposedly faster, but i think its good pace, doesn't waste time. tutor was some student, who is alright. i scored slightly above average for my midterms
difficulty: 2
workload: 3
expected grade/achieved grade: A

MA1100 Fundamentals concepts of Math
core mods, but.. it was quite tough. hard to follow, prof chin chee whye was... i think he'd be alright for high levels mod but for an intro math mod.. he's quite terrible. lecture slides are quite simplified and to the point, but.. it's difficult if u don't have knowledge. which a lot of us didn't. lecture attendance was terrible. he's not a very good lecturer. i know he's brilliant and all, but we're not all geniuses *lol* its interesting though, knowing the fundamentals to numbers and all. but quite difficult to understand some parts. that being said, now doing this review after taking 2101, its really necessary *lol*. workload not that much, but coz its difficult u spend quite long on it. very little work actually. also, prof chin does't believe in model answers, so ... there's completely no answers at all. only those discussed in tutorials, and if u didn't copy u dead. note: don't be deceived by the name of this mod, my lsm friend took this and died so bad *lol*
difficulty: 4
workload: 2
expected grade/achieved grade: C/B+ (really surprised. because the tutorials were really terribly hard, but the finals turned out to be just tutorial and homework questions so i probably did well for finals. midterms were difficult)

GEK1508 Einstein's universe & quantum weirdness
i hate this mod, i hate physics. i thought it'd be fun but no i don't like. i can't do physics for nuts. my physics friends said its simple, another who took h3 physics said its so damn easy. but the prof does make it interesting and he's quite funny. but.. content is terrible i can't grasp it. it makes no sense. physics is shit.
difficulty: 4
workload: 3 (due to group project. took quite a bit of time. tutorials are alternate weeks, with nothing much to do no kidding haha. attendance counts though, as do forum postings. )
expected/achieved: C/B-

ES1541 Exploring science communication through popular science
compulsory for FOS students. damn lame. its basically a combination of GP, and PW, with the essays and presentations. i'm good at presentations, so no big for me. i scored pretty well so far, even a few highest scores for presentations. group presentation was great, as i grouped with 2 other OG mates, we mostly discussed through whatsapp and ppl are amazed we actually got work done just by discussing on whatsapp *lol*. i shouldn't comment much since ppl will only take this mod because they have to *LOL* no choice. but.. its not too bad, since its about all the sciences e.g. math stats bio physics chem and you're from FOS theres bound to be at least 1 topic thats quite interesting
difficulty: 2
workload: 4
expected/achieved: A/B+ (i swear its the final personal essay that killed me. my tutor hated my topic)

mods taken in Y1S2
MA2108 Mathematical Analysis I
i didn't like it. core mod, no choice. i was quite lost for first half, but unsure if thats because its difficult or i just skipped too many lectures. ***lol***. lecturer to wing keung or something was TERRIBLE. he just puts you to sleep, worse lecturer **lol**. content wasn't very interesting to me either. i did quite badly for my midterms though.
difficulty: 4 (it got better towards the end, i actually understood. but that was just before finals *lol*)
workload: 3
expected/achieved: B/B+

MA2101 Linear Algebra I
this was known to be difficult, my seniors told me. so.. was quite afraid. turns out to be alright for me? my clique found it difficult though. i thought the prof was alright, prof zhang de qi. he tries to be funny but he's not very **lol**. his accent kills some, but i'm fine with it. he managed somewhat clear explanations. i did above average for midterms though.
difficulty: 4
workload: 3
expected/achieved: A-/B+

MA1104 Multivariable Calculus
core mod. easy. but big cohort. bell curve. slacked a bit, did below average for midterms.
difficulty: 1
workload: 3
expected/achieved: A-/B+

GEK1004FC Reason and Persuasion
interesting, somewhat. i really put in effort, participating in forums, and tutorial discussions. but.. idk sighs. i thought i  did pretty well for finals though, mcq 20 questions. not difficult.
difficulty: 3
workload: 3 (readings)
expected/achieved: A-/B+

GEK1002 Intro to Japanese Studies
interesting, but mostly took it cost cheap. head its difficult, but i put in quite a lot of effort as well, participated a lot of tutorials and forum. i swear every single tutorial i was speaking. hahahah. but really content was interesting, Dr hislop's lectures were really interesting too. but be warned, lectures terribly fuelled my wanderlust to go to japan hahah. sensei tutor was quite interesting too haha.
difficulty: 2
workload: 4 (group project and readings. PEOPLE ARE BITCHES, my group mates were terrible. except annabel. hahaha. everyone else sucks, they did NOT do work. if not for this i'm sure i could have gotten an A. we got a D+ for the group project. seriously. zzzzzz. )
expected/achieved: A/B+ (read above)

pm me for info/notes. i do still keep them.

    1. yes i do. i have 1104 which i can pass you, the textbook? BUT there's a lot of pencil marks plus pages falling out *LOL* but if u still want it u can have it for free **LOL**. i might have some matlab notes also.
i think i'll still keep 1100 though. it's interesting HAHAH so i'm gonna keep it *LOL*

    5. you should have received the link from box.com to be a collaborator. just accept create account then u can access all the nus modules resources. share with other ppl also if they need la.
nope i'm in year 2 i took a gap year

    6. Hey tks i received the invitation. didnt know theres such great stuff! yes i will share w my friends. Oh then by any chance u taking ma2213 or something LOL

      Delete
    7. oh its numerical analysis. nope, it's not my core mod. plus... it sounds terribly boring *LOL*

      Delete
    8. yup, the folder is good stuff right. you're lucky i'm nice *LOL*. you also obviously did not go for camps to make friends/know seniors.

      Delete
    9. Hey can you send it to me please? I'm planning to take math in sem2, transferring to math as well LOL my email is lekpeng96@hotmail.com. thanks a lot!!

    10. hey! can send to me too? snowycj@hotmail.com i am planning to double major in math, i guess 1100 will be one of the hard modules

      Delete
    11. hey i tried, but the owner of the file on box.com locked the sharing access so i can't share it anymore.

  2. YES you are super nice ! thanks!! erm yea didn't go for any form of camps etc. -___-

oh pure maths major no numerical analysis?

    1. nope thats not a pure mod.
ok luh if u need help or shit, see my mood i might help you.

    2. I'm like year 1 sem 2 technically and im in PROF CHIN's MA1100 CLASS fml... his lecture super hard to follow

    3. LOLOLOL
      GOOD LUCK BRO
i died. in his left. its rly hard to follow..... you should go home and like.. read up more on what he's talking about to understand better. which i didn't do hahahahahah can give advice to ppl but nv do it myself *lol*
but you're realise that... he set a good foundation. ok you'll realise that when u take la2 and algebra. he's good.. but i think if nobody understands doesn't make u a good lecturer. he rly wants u to learn math la but......... he's not giving u an easy way hahahaha

    4. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I REPLIED TWICE AND NEVER APPEAR . but anyways the mod should be an easy A for me by default before i took it... BUT NOW TKS to chin hee whye i dont know what shit he is talking GG.

      Delete
    5. i transferred from another fac cause i rly love maths... i hate prof chin his notes are really hard to decipher.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

      Delete
    6. *lol* why would the mod be an easy A for you.....................
good luck for midterms. your notes will seem very useless *LOL* go have a look at his midterm papers

      Delete
    7. Cause looking at the past year content its easy. I done mid terms ytd, after seeing the solution should be 80+/120... dont know how bad is it man... any insights on how you guys fare last sem? but of course i left one qn blank if not will minus marks

      Delete
    8. i got -40.... *LOL*
my friend got 30, and eventually he got an A. i eventually got a B+ which was much better than all the midterms because the finals was REALLY easy

      Delete
    9. Now he changed to wrong answer only minus 5 marks, so i got 100/120... but still got a lot getting 30-50. i was thrown off by his proving question on mapping -__- so difficult.

      Delete
    10. Without your valuable box i would never know what type of qn he will come out with tks !!!

      Delete
    11. yeah u lucky. i think my batch was the first time he took 1100, so... no point looking at pyp, and we totally didn't know what his format for tests will be like.

      Delete
  3. Hello! I chance upon this post after googling MA1100. I'm one of those that got <<<<<<30 for the latest mid terms lol. I have absolutely no idea what's going on during lecture and in tutorial. May I know how did you managed to study for this module/ understand the concept in the end? Thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i managed to read thru his past year paper (one of them) and roughly know he likes to set true false questions, so pls do go through the concepts well enough. If cant understand, i strongly recommend going to library to borrow fundamental concepts of mathematics compiled by prof victor tan to read his simplified notes. etc

      Delete
    2. Run through his concepts well as in do understand his fundamentals, some of the proving part is difficult so you may skip it, because he will not test those, but if you like to read and understand, go ahead. this blogs owner aka nice senior invited me to a box where there are some past years notes and etc for your reference which helped. and yea i believe you are a year one student, you may just SU them, but still must study lol cause it helps. --- if you are a maths major that is

      Delete
    3. Dang alright! I'll try doing that first and see if I can understand a little of what's going on! :/ I am quite afraid that I might not even be able to get a C hahhaha >< Thank you though!! :)

      Delete
    4. yeah agree with hongnan gao. since u probably year1 u can SU, but its really damn important if you're a math major, to go through the content rigorously at least once.
personally for me i went to the library to check out some books, whatever i can find on the relevant topics that i don't understand. some of my classmates bought the textbook also, written by victor tan i think. oh i see hongnan gao recommended u to borrow the same textbook from the library.
i also googled stuff i don't understand, and actually studied from the notes of many other universities, so there's actually a lot of resources out there.

      Delete
    5. Wait wait, calling me hongnan gao is so god damn awkward :((((((
and no, im not a PRC, but of course my origins do come from China.
Yea im lucky, but prof chin teaching us on Peano axioms and natural numbers wth.
@ annoymous i recommend you to read on element set theory by herbert as well. its good, if need be can always approach me, or maybe Lim zhan yi who's more zai than me.

    6. Hahaha okay thank you!! Attempting to study for MT2 and I'm dying omg everything is so dang confusing to me T.T

    7. I can assist u if u want ? Maybe we can chat over fb or something

      Delete
    8. I would be really thankful for that!! If you dont mind me being annoying and asking really basic questions haha

    9. yeap add me @ hong nan on facebook and add me or something

  4. Hi, do you have the midterm paper for ma2101? What kind of questions were you tested on? I haven't been going to his lecture and tutorials since the beginning, I have trouble understanding his accent so I haven't been following the mod at all, and I only have 4 days to prepare for midterm 😐

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh u are lucky i still keep all my 2101 stuff and yeah i have my midterm paper also. his midterm only have 4 questions, i'd say its pretty doable. leave your email i can email u the paper. hahah this accent was difficult at the start, but i got used to it. he actually says a lot of lame/funny stuff HAHA. i quite liked him. i also attended ALL of his tutorials **lol**. i think its a lot more effective to learn from the tutorials because he's actually really really approachable, and can clear doubts in tutorial.
i honestly don't rly know what to tell u to focus on, since u have 4 days. erm. try to cram everything in **lol**, but also u need to understand them. haha. all the best.

    2. Hi, my email id is awesomeness13134@gmail.com. Thank you so much!
What should I concentrate more on? Like, which chapters? Ive noticed that he mostly uses results derived in LA1 but inserts complicated terminology in between (I guess thats LA2 HAHA)

    3. Sorry but i kinda rofled at ur email !!! LOL good luck bro, 2101 isnt easy, but w ample practice can one

    4. Hahah thanks!! :p
@ster have you sent out the email yet?

    5. eh sorry no haven't sent. i needa scan it, but i no scanner **lol**.
ok i summarise for u here. only got 4 qns.
      1. Let v1, v2, v3, v4 be row vectors in the row 3-space V = R3. Form a matrix A:= (v1^t,.., v4^t)
Suppose that A i show equivalent to following matrix
      R = (1302/ 0013/ 0000) (its a 3x4 matrix. the / means next row)
      (a) find asubset S of {v1, ... , v4} such that S is a basis of Span{v1, ..., v4}
      (b) express every vector vi (not in S) as a linear combination of vectors in S
      (c) Find a simpler basis of the row space Row(A) for the matrix A
      (d) Determine the dimension of the column space Col(A) for the matrix A
      (e) Determine the nullity(A) for the matrix A

    6. qn 3
      Let $V$ be a vector space over a field $F$ and let $W_{i}\subseteq V$ be two subspaces such that $V = W_{1}+W_{2}$. Let $\gamma :V\rightarrow V/W_{2}, v \mapsto \bar{v} = v + W_{2}$ be the quotient map, which is known to be a linear transformation.
      (a) Show that$ \gamma(W_{1})=V/W_{2}$
      (b) Let $\gamma _{1} = \gamma _{|W_{1}}: W_{1}\rightarrow V/W_{2}$ be the restriction of $\gamma$ . This $\gamma _{1}$ is known to be the linear transformation. Show that $Ker(\gamma _{1}) = W_{1}\cap$ W_{2}

    7. qn 4
      (a) Let $V$ be a vector space over a field $F$, and let $v_{i}$ be three distinct nonzero vectors in $V$ such that $\left \{ v_{1}, v_{3}, v_{3} \right \}$ is a linearly dependent subset of $V$. Is it true that $v_{3} = \alpha _{1}v_{1} + \alpha _{2}v_{2}$ for some $\alpha _{i}\in F$? If the answer is 'yes', prove so; if the answer is 'no', give a concrete counterexample.
      (b) Let $V$ be a vector space over a field $F$ and $W_{i}$($i$ = 1, ..., 4) four distinct nonzero subspaces of V. Suppose that $W_{i}\cap W_{j} = \left \{ 0 \right \}$ for all $i\neq j$. Is it true that the sum $W_{1}+...+W_{4}$ is a direct sum (i.e., $W_{1} + ... + W_{4} = W_{1}\oplus ...\oplus W_{4}$)? If the answer is 'yes', prove so; if the answer is 'no' give a concrete counterexample.

  6. qn 2
Let V and W be vector spaces over a field $F$ and let $f: V\rightarrow W$ be a surjective linear transformatioin.
(Warning: V may not be finite-dimensional; S and T may not be finite sets.)
    (a) Suppose that $S$ is a linearly dependent subset of $V$. Show that the image $f(S) = \left \{ f(s)|s\in S \right \}$ is a linearly dependent subset of $W$.
    (b) Suppose that $T$ is a linearly independent subset of $W$. is the pre-image $f^{-1}(T) = \left \{ v\in V|f(v)\in T \right \}$ a linearly independent subset of $V$?
    (c) If the answer is 'yes', prove so; if the answer is 'no' give a concrete counterexample.

    2. Hi ster, by any chance do you have the solutions for the mid-terms for MA2101? :)

  7. Hello, really glad to chance upon this blog from google, i'm a prospective Applied Math major who is enrolling in AY16/17. I have been trying to self-study "Fundamental" concepts of Mathematics, but to no avail lol!
Could you add me to the so-called drop box you've mentioned above? tay.yongqiang@gmail.com
